You may have seen that Michael Caine chose to auction off a number of his personal items last month – naturally this included a number of Get Carter items. The highlight of this collection for Get Carter fans was a chair used by Michael Caine himself on the set of the film for relaxing in between takes. The Ted Lewis Centre, based in Hull, took on the mantle of attending the auction and happily enough they purchased the chair, despite it eventually going for well past it’s reserve.
Over 45 supporters crowdfunded £2500 and […] our volunteer CEO travelled to Bonhams auction in Mayfair on 2nd March 2022 and successfully bid £5,000, plus a buyer’s commission of £1600, well over the auction house’s estimate of £1200. The purchase required subsequent anonymous support from a local endowment.
I’m pleased to say that the chair has been delivered to the Ted Lewis Centre and they have created a wonderful exhibition of the story of it which is now open for visitors. They also detailed the delivery and creation of their build with various posts on their Twitter account, some of which I have linked to below.
